Nystrom Education

Hands-on Social Studies Program

Use The Nystrom Atlas of United States History plus markable activity maps to take students chronologically through the country's story line. Students build a chronological foundation of key themes and events, look for causes and effects, and analyze maps, graphs, photos, and text to discover patterns and relationships. They gather visual and textual evidence, plot information on markable activity maps, and synthesize their conclusions through writing assignments and graphic organizers. A 273-page teacher's guide supplies detailed teaching instructions and reproducible handouts for 63 lessons that link history and geography, plus ten assessments. Many activities incorporate 15 laminated, markable, double-sided, foldout activity maps (from 13" x 19" to 39" x 19") showing the U.S., the world, the Americas, and Europe. The complete program comprises 30 atlases, 15 activity maps, 15 markers, and the teacher's guide. The teacher's guide comes with an additional 15 information literacy lessons. The atlas and guide cover ten units as outlined in the National History Standards:
  • Era 1: Three Worlds Meet
  • Era 2: Colonization and Settlement
  • Era 3: Revolution and the New Nation
  • Era 4: Expansion and Reform
  • Era 5: Civil War and Reconstruction
  • Era 6: Development of the Industrial United States
  • Era 7: Emergence of Modern America
  • Era 8: The Great Depression and World War II
  • Era 9: United States After World War II
  • Era 10: Contemporary United States
